Where to look
Open the driver’s door and look at the B-pillar — the vertical post the door latches onto — or at the edge of the door itself. On most trucks you will find two labels within a few inches of each other. Some manufacturers put one on the door and one on the pillar; a few put both on the pillar. If the driver’s side is bare, check the passenger side and the glovebox before assuming it is missing.
Take a photograph of both. You will want them at a dealership, at a scale, and every time somebody in a forum asks what your payload is.
Label one: Tire and Loading Information
This is the smaller label, white with a yellow band across the top. It exists to tell you your tyre sizes and cold inflation pressures, and almost everyone stops reading there. The line that matters is in the yellow band:
“The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX lbs.”
That number is your payload. Not the brochure’s payload. Not the model’s payload. The payload of this truck, with the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain and options it was actually built with, weighed at the end of the line.
The label may also carry the seating capacity, front and rear, which is a separate legal figure and not a weight.
What counts against that number
Everything you add to the truck. People, including the driver. Luggage, tools, coolers, dogs, firewood, the case of water behind the seat. The hitch hardware — a weight-distribution head and bars is typically 80 to 120 lb. And, critically, the tongue weight of the trailer, because the trailer’s tongue rests on the truck’s hitch and the truck carries it exactly as it carries a passenger.
What does not count: fuel. The truck was weighed with a full tank, so a full tank is already in the curb weight and is not deducted twice.
The catch nobody mentions
The label was printed at the factory. Everything bolted on since — bed liner, running boards, tonneau cover, bull bar, tool box, fifth-wheel rails, a winch, a second battery — is now part of what the truck weighs, but was never subtracted from the number on the label.
A truck carrying 150 lb of accessories has 150 lb less usable payload than its own sticker claims. This is why weighing the empty truck once, with your normal fuel level and nothing in it, is worth doing. Subtract that scale figure from GVWR and you have your real payload, which is the number the payload calculator checks against GVWR alongside the sticker.
Label two: Safety Compliance Certification
The larger label, usually white or silver, with the manufacturer’s name, the month and year of manufacture, the VIN, and a short block of ratings. Three lines matter here.
- GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The most the loaded truck alone may weigh: curb weight plus everything and everyone in it, plus tongue weight. It is the single hard ceiling on the truck by itself.
- GAWR FRT — the front axle rating. Easy to overlook and worth knowing, because a heavy tongue on a plain ball unloads the front axle, and a front axle carrying too little is a steering and braking problem long before anything is technically over.
- GAWR RR — the rear axle rating. This is the one to write down. The hitch ball sits three to four feet behind the rear axle, so tongue weight presses down behind the axle and levers weight off the front. The rear axle ends up carrying more than the tongue weight itself, which is why it is often the first limit exceeded on a bumper-pull.
Axle ratings are also a statement about the tyres and wheels fitted at the factory. Change those and the rating does not follow you — the lower of the two governs.
What is not on the door
GCWR — Gross Combined Weight Rating, the most the truck and trailer may weigh together — is almost never on the door jamb. Look in the owner’s manual, or in the manufacturer’s towing guide for your model year, engine, axle ratio and drivetrain. It is the one figure in this exercise you will have to go and find.
The tow rating is not on the door either, and that is not an oversight. It is a drivetrain capability figure, not a chassis rating, and the door labels are strictly about what the chassis may carry.
Why the sticker beats every published spec
Payload varies per individual vehicle, and the variation is not small. Four-wheel drive, a crew cab, a sunroof, a heavier engine, a towing package, leather seats — each adds weight, and each pound of truck is a pound of payload gone. Two identically badged pickups on the same lot can differ by five hundred pounds.
Spec tables publish a range, or the figure for the lightest configuration, because that is all a table can do. The label was produced for the truck it is stuck to. Where the two disagree, the label wins. That includes disagreeing with anything on this site.
A ninety-second routine
- Open the driver’s door. Photograph both labels.
- From the yellow band: write down payload.
- From the certification label: write down GVWR, GAWR FRT and GAWR RR.
- From the owner’s manual or towing guide: write down GCWR.
- Keep all five in your phone. They are the only numbers that can answer "will this work?"
If the label is missing or unreadable
It happens on older trucks, repainted doors and replacement panels. A dealer can usually print the original build data from the VIN, and the manufacturer’s customer line can confirm GVWR and the axle ratings. Payload is the hardest to recover, but you can reconstruct it honestly: weigh the empty truck on a certified scale with your usual fuel and nothing in it, then subtract that figure from GVWR. The result is better than the sticker anyway, because it includes every accessory you have added since.
Then weigh the whole thing
Reading the labels tells you what you are allowed. A scale tells you where you actually are. Pull onto a CAT scale with the trailer coupled — steer axle on the first pad, drive axle on the second, trailer axles on the third — buy a ticket, then unhitch, park the trailer and weigh the truck alone. The difference between the two truck totals is your true tongue weight, and it is almost always higher than the percentage you assumed.
