Tongue weight: measured vs estimated

Every towing calculator, including this one, multiplies your trailer weight by a percentage. That percentage is an assumption about how somebody else packed their trailer. Here is what actually moves it.

Why the percentage exists

Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer’s coupler puts on your hitch ball. It is not a property of the trailer alone — it is a property of the trailer as loaded, and it changes every time you move something inside.

Since nobody can know how you packed, the industry works to ranges. Conventional bumper-pull trailers are designed to sit between 10% and 15% of loaded trailer weight on the tongue. Fifth wheels and goosenecks carry far more, 20% to 25%, because the pin sits over the truck’s rear axle rather than behind it.

Within the conventional range, 13% is a reasonable planning default, and it is what the payload calculator uses unless you tell it otherwise. It sits in the upper half of the range because most loaded travel trailers do, and because on a payload question the honest error is the conservative one.

But it is a default, not a measurement. It is the answer to "roughly how much payload should I expect this to consume?" — never to "what is my tongue weight?"

Why too little is more dangerous than too much

Most people worry about a heavy tongue, because that is the number that eats payload. The failure mode that actually hurts people is the opposite one.

A trailer with too little tongue weight is unstable. Weight behind the trailer’s axles acts like a pendulum, and above a certain speed a small disturbance — a gust, a truck passing, a steering correction — grows instead of damping. That is sway, and it can escalate to a jackknife faster than most drivers can react.

This is why "just move stuff to the back to fix your payload problem" is bad advice, and why a tongue weight below the range is a loading fault to correct rather than a saving to enjoy. Too heavy is an axle and payload problem, which is arithmetic. Too light is a control problem, which is not.

What moves the real figure

Almost everything you put in a trailer sits somewhere other than over its axles, and the further from the axles it sits, the more leverage it has.

Two identical trailers on the same dealer lot, packed by two families, will not have the same tongue weight. That is not a flaw in the percentage — it is the reason a percentage cannot be the final answer.

Three ways to measure it

1. A CAT scale — the best answer

Weigh the rig coupled, unhitch, weigh the truck alone, and subtract. The difference is your tongue weight, measured on certified equipment with the trailer loaded exactly as you tow it. Full procedure in the CAT scale guide.

It has one further advantage nothing else offers: the same two tickets also give you your front and rear axle weights, which is what the ratings are actually written against.

2. A tongue weight scale

A purpose-built scale that sits under the coupler or jack and reads the download directly. Accurate enough for the job, and the practical advantage is that you can use it repeatedly, at home, while you move things around. Check the scale’s capacity covers your expected tongue weight — some models stop well below what a large travel trailer produces.

3. The lever method

The improvised version, using a household bathroom scale, a length of pipe and a plank set up as a lever so the scale reads a known fraction of the true load. It works, it costs nothing, and the arithmetic is only as good as your measuring. Two cautions: bathroom scales are least accurate at the top of their range, and anything involving a loaded trailer resting on improvised supports needs to be set up so that a slip drops the tongue onto the ground rather than onto you.

A worked example

A trailer with a loaded weight of 7,550 lb. At the 13% default, the estimate is 982 lb of tongue weight.

The owner travels with a full 40-gallon fresh tank (334 lb) mounted forward of the axles, two full propane bottles and two batteries on the A-frame, and a generator in a front box. Measured on a scale, the real figure comes out well above the estimate.

Every pound of that difference is payload — it comes off the same number as passengers and bed cargo, and it lands on the rear axle multiplied by the leverage of a ball three feet behind it. An estimate that is 150 lb light on tongue weight can be the difference between a setup that passes and one that does not.

This is why the calculator lets you enter a measured tongue weight and switches to it the moment you do. A measurement always beats a percentage.

What to do with the number once you have it

  1. Check it against your hitch and receiver ratings. Both carry a maximum tongue weight, and it is a separate limit from the trailer weight rating.
  2. Check the percentage it works out to. Below about 10% of loaded trailer weight, move load forward before your next trip. Above 15%, look at what is on the A-frame.
  3. Add it to your payload. It counts in full, alongside passengers, cargo and hitch hardware.
  4. Re-measure when the load changes. A new generator, a different water habit, bikes on the back — each of those is a new number.
