GVWR — the truck by itself
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The maximum the loaded truck alone may weigh. Curb weight, plus every person, plus everything in the cab and bed, plus the hitch hardware, plus the trailer’s tongue weight resting on the ball.
It is printed on the certification label inside your driver’s door. It does not change with options, tyres or a lift kit, and it is not a quantity you can add to.
Payload is derived from it. Payload = GVWR − the truck’s actual empty weight. That is why payload is per-truck rather than per-model: two identically badged pickups with the same GVWR have different payloads because one of them weighs more empty.
GAWR — each axle separately
Gross Axle Weight Rating, quoted twice: front and rear. The maximum each axle may carry, reflecting the axle, springs, wheels and the tyres fitted at the factory.
Two things about GAWR routinely surprise people.
First, the two GAWRs added together are usually more than GVWR. That is not a mistake and it does not give you extra capacity — it exists because load distribution varies, so each axle is rated with headroom. You must pass GVWR and both GAWRs. Passing the sum of the axle ratings proves nothing.
Second, the rear axle sees more than the tongue weight. The ball sits three to four feet behind it, so the rear axle acts as a fulcrum: the tongue presses down behind it and levers weight off the front. On a plain ball the rear axle can carry noticeably more than the tongue weight itself, while the front axle gets lighter. This is why rear GAWR is the limit most often exceeded first on a bumper-pull, and why weight distribution exists.
Change your wheels or tyres and the axle rating does not follow you upward. The lower of the axle rating and the tyre rating governs.
GCWR — truck and trailer together
Gross Combined Weight Rating. The maximum the truck and trailer may weigh together on the road. This is the drivetrain’s limit: the engine that has to pull it up the grade, the transmission and cooling that have to survive doing so, and the brakes that have to stop it.
GCWR is almost never on the door jamb. It lives in the owner’s manual or in the manufacturer’s towing guide for your exact model year, engine, axle ratio, cab and drivetrain — and it varies substantially between those configurations.
The useful arithmetic: maximum trailer = GCWR − the truck’s actual loaded weight, measured with your family and gear in it. Not curb weight. That distinction is where most optimistic towing plans quietly fail.
Tow rating — a capability, not a chassis limit
The number in the brochure. It describes what the drivetrain can pull, derived under standardised test conditions with a specifically configured truck — commonly a base cab, minimal options, and a 150 lb driver and no other occupants.
It is a real number and it is not a lie. It is simply answering a question you did not ask. Your question is what you may hitch to your truck, loaded with your family, and that is decided by payload, GVWR and the axles — usually long before the tow rating comes into it. How they interact
Hitch up and one event affects three ratings at once. The tongue weight:
— counts against payload, exactly like a passenger;
— counts against GVWR, because it is weight resting on the truck;
— lands on the rear axle, multiplied by the leverage of the ball behind it;
— and is not counted twice in GCWR, because the combined figure already
includes the whole trailer.
So a single decision — a trailer with a heavier nose — moves payload, GVWR and rear GAWR together, in the same direction, at different rates. Checking one of them tells you almost nothing about the others.
Which one binds first
On a modern half-ton with a crew cab, four-wheel drive and a decent options list, the order is usually:
- Payload / GVWR. Nearly always first. A family of four, their luggage, a hitch and a thousand pounds of tongue weight consumes most of a half-ton’s payload before the trailer has moved an inch.
- Rear GAWR. Frequently second, and sometimes first on a truck with a light rear end and a heavy-nosed trailer.
- GCWR. Occasionally, on genuinely large trailers.
- Tow rating. Rarely the binding constraint on a family towing a travel trailer, which is exactly why quoting it as the answer is so misleading.
On a three-quarter-ton the order often reverses, because payload is abundant and the drivetrain limit arrives first. That difference is the real argument in the half-ton versus three-quarter-ton question.
The five numbers to write down
- Payload — yellow band on the tire and loading label.
- GVWR — certification label.
- GAWR front — certification label.
- GAWR rear — certification label.
- GCWR — owner’s manual or towing guide.
Keep them in your phone. Every towing question you will ever be asked is answered by some combination of those five, and the payload calculator checks all of them at once rather than one at a time.
Why the ratings are not suggestions
They are not round numbers invented by marketing. They are the manufacturer’s statement about what the brakes, springs, axles, wheels, tyres, frame and cooling were engineered and validated to handle together.
Exceeding them does not usually produce a dramatic failure on a flat road on a cool day. It produces longer stopping distances, heat that shortens component life, degraded handling in a crosswind, and a much narrower margin on the one day that goes wrong — a long descent, a blowout, an emergency swerve. It also raises questions about insurance and liability after an incident that you would very much rather not be answering.
And when it matters, weigh it. A CAT scale ticket replaces all four checks with measurements for about the price of lunch.
